Ether Cards are like gift cards but for Ether and ERC20 tokens. Similar to any other cryptocurrency wallet they include a public key and a private key, the public key is represented on the back of the card with a scannable QR code while the private key is hidden under a scratchable film. Ether and ERC20 tokens are sent to the public address and then given to somebody as a gift. This can be done using any of the common mobile wallets such as Jaxx or Coinomi or a hardware wallet like the Digital Bitbox.
The receiver can then take the card, scratch off the film and reveal the private key. They are then able to perform what's known as a "sweep" where all of the wallets contents are transferred from the card to the wallet. In Jaxx, this is found under Tools>Transfer Paper Wallet
The private key is then scanned or typed into the text field. The easiest is simply scanning it by pressing the camera icon in the text field.
Jaxx will then give you the option of completing the transfer into the mobile wallet. At this point the funds have been completely sweeped from the card and the currency solely resides on Jaxx.
Ether cards are perfect for giving gifts to family and friends as the perfect chance to introduce them to the world of cryptocurrency and have a larger talk about blockchain technology. Ether cards introduce most of the important concepts to beginners such as public keys vs. private keys, mobile wallets vs. paper wallets, different types of currencies and the concept of peer-to-peer value transfer.
Another use case for Ether cards are if you simply need to do a transfer to an individual and you want to add a physical element to it. You can simply transfer the currency to the card beforehand and then hand off the card to the person instead of transferring on the spot.
